What brought you two to CrossFit?
We joined CrossFit for a couple reasons. First, we had just moved to Newmarket and didn’t know anyone in the area. We’d always heard that CrossFit gyms had great communities so we thought it’d be a great opportunity to meet people in the area! Secondly, we had both been going to other gyms for a long time, and it was starting to get monotonous, with no real improvements or even goals in mind. On a whim, we decided to try CrossFit and we were hooked from the first class!
What was your first impression(s)?
We had a great time and thought everyone was friendly and encouraging but also remember thinking: “What have we gotten ourselves into”! It took forever to even remember the difference between a snatch and clean, power or hang positions. And there were so many skills (HSPU’s, muscle ups, etc) that we figured we’d never be able to do - regardless of how much we tried!
How has that impression changed?
What we both love about CrossFit, is that regardless of your skill level, there is always something you can be working toward. With hard work and consistency you can see huge improvements in your fitness levels. We’ve come much further with CrossFit than we’d have expected at the beginning (and there’s still a long way to go)!
What was your best day at CrossFit?
Kyla’s best day: the day I got pull ups! When I was training in my teens for sprint kayaking, I was the only team member who couldn’t do any pull ups - and I hated it. Then last June, all of a sudden I started doing pull-ups - I had only been doing CrossFit for 6 months and hadn’t even realized how much stronger I had gotten.
Pat: Everyday at CrossFit is the best, I always look forward to it.
What are some of your accomplishments (weight loss, PR’s, overcoming injury, personal goals, competitions, etc.)?
Every time we finish a workout it’s an accomplishment! It’s been about 18 months since we started CrossFit, and looking back you realize how much you’ve accomplished. If you had of told us back then we never would have thought we’d be doing Olympic lifting, HSPU’s or pull-ups! So excited to see where we’ll be next year!
What are your new goals?
Kyla: Trying to work on gymnastic skills, and of course double unders!
Pat: I’d like to be able to get proficient enough with muscle ups and hand stand push ups to complete workouts that include them.
What do you love most about CFNAC?
We have been at CFNAC for about 7 months, and hands down we love the community. It’s always daunting starting at a new gym, but from the first day everyone was so welcoming. Even on Sundays we were always asked to join in on others workouts - which was especially appreciated as newbies!
