What brought you to CrossFit?
My husband and I got married on a beach in April 2013 and wanted to look and feel as great as possible! He started Crossfit first, following a few friends of ours. There was an immediate shift in his mindset, eating habits and motivation - he lost a lot of weight and got really fit very quickly.
At the time I was pretty fit, teaching ten yoga classes a week...but knew I needed to get out of my comfort zone a bit to take my fitness further, so I joined him.
What was your first impression?
I found the environment a bit intimidating. Back then it was still the small gym in Newmarket, and a smaller group of athletes who attended - many of them seemed a lot more hardcore about fitness than I was! Some of the workouts seemed daunting - I don’t think I’d ever lifted barbells over my head prior to Crossfit.
How has that impression changed?
I can’t remember the last time I felt “intimidated”! It’s such a great atmosphere and community...full of all different types of people with their own reasons for going. It really is for everyone.
What was your best day at CrossFit?
I think it was probably soon after I first joined - when I did my first set of unbroken, unmodified pushups! It was my first breakthrough of many more to come, and real proof that I really was getting stronger in everything I did.
What are some of your accomplishments?
In the last five years, I’ve had whiplash from a car accident, an ankle sprain, three pregnancies (including a miscarriage and a high-risk pregnancy that put me on “rest” at 27 weeks), and nutrient deficiencies as well as new possible allergies brought about through pregnancy. The body has been through a lot! Crossfit has made me better for all of it. I’ve been able to stay safely active, regain strength and mobility, build stamina, hit the ball way harder during baseball season, and feel like a better version of myself again and again.
What are your new goals?
Currently, I am working toward shedding the last (and hardest!) bit of pregnancy weight and becoming stronger as I work through some recurring injuries. I hope to soon be able to do unbroken, unmodified pushups again. There are many things I can’t do yet, but I think I would be most excited to do a handstand shout fear! I’m dying to feel the freedom it brings...hopefully soon!
What do you love most about CFNAC?
I LOVE the community. I might be able to find a cheaper gym, or one with childcare where I don’t have to haul in a “baby cage” for the twins, but I love that I can do that here and that it’s welcomed...and it ends up being part of the experience and conversation! If I were anywhere else, I wouldn’t be hanging out half an hour after class, still chatting with others. CFNAC is the whole package for me!
