Everywhere we turn, we can find sugar. In our morning coffee, in our favorite snacks, even in items we might not suspect, like bread and pasta sauce. Sugar isn’t inherently bad, but when consumed in excess, it could lead to some serious health problems. So let’s talk straight, how much sugar is too much?

How much sugar are you supposed to have in a day? According to the American Heart Association, men should limit their sugar intake to about 9 teaspoons a day, while women should stick to around 6 teaspoons. Now, keep in mind those numbers refer to added sugars, not sugars that naturally occur in foods like fruits and vegetables.

## Hidden Sugars

You might be surprised by how easily added sugars can creep into your diet. A single can of soda can contain upwards of 8 teaspoons of added sugar! By becoming more aware of where these sugars hide, you can make healthier decisions about what you’re putting into your body.

What about substitutes like honey or artificial sweeteners? While these can be useful tools to limit sugar intake, they can also mislead us into thinking a sweet treat is healthier than it really is. Making fresh, whole foods the primary part of your diet is the most surefire way to keep your sugar intake at a healthy level.

Managing your sugar intake doesn’t mean you need to eliminate all sweetness from your life. Small changes can add up to big progress. Start by cutting out one sugary drink per day, or switching out dessert for fresh fruit a few times a week.
